About this image:
A "Whale of a Tale" or is it a "Tail of a Whale"
One of the things that the Glacier Bay area is so well known
for are the whale sightings. Humpback whales migrate every
spring from Mexico and Hawaii to feed in the nutrient rich
waters. Whale watching boats, cruise ship passengers and
private boats are all treated to spectacular displays of
whales breaching (jumping out of the water), surfacing to
dive and a general display of the enormous size and gentle
appearing nature of these creatures. |

About this image:
Making a splash!
This humpback whale jumped clear out of the water and landed
with a crash. It is not exactly known why they jump, but it
could be to remove barnacles and parasites on the outside of
their bodies, a show of power or just because they like
doing it. This sight is seen several times daily and is a
highlight to any trip by boat including the cruise ships. |

About this image:
Fang takes a break
Planning and navigating takes a lot of time and attention.
Apparently during this planning session, Fang felt too
overwhelmed by the decisions and decided it was time to take
a break. And what better place to plop your body down and
relax than in the middle of Glacier Bay, Alaska while
cruising through Glacier Bay.

About this image:
Nice beak buddy!
The youngness of Glacier Bay (the ice only began retreating
250 years ago) is very noticeable in the diversity of
foliage here, but the animals as well seen to take on a more
noticeable quality. We saw this little Tufted Puffin in the
distance and thought "That can't be right, look at the
beak". Sure enough we sailed closer and it was what it
looked like. This cool looking Tufted Puffin, with his
"hair" slicked back on his head was just cruising around.
Another new experience in Glacier Bay. |

About this image:
Sea Otter just bobbing about
The Sea Otters are such a funny animal to watch. This one
was bobbing about near Mad Dog, apparently without a care in
the world. They're are a clumsy animal on land as the Sea
Otters are developed and evolved specifically for life on
the water. You can see his flipper like hind legs sticking
out of the water as he leisurely kicks along once and a
while to propel himself forward to wherever he is going. |

About this image:
Steller Sea Lions up on a rock
What a sight! South Marble Island, Glacier Bay, Alaska
is renowned for it's groups of Steller Sea Lions. These
Sea Lions are most often the ones seen by visitors to
the Glacier Bay Park. They are such large creatures that
they can even be seen by passengers on cruise ships.
This group of Steller Sea Lions was busy grunting,
groaning, growling, snorting and in general making more
loud and disgusting noises. They jostled and pushed
about for a better position in order to lay out and
spend the day in the sun. |
