About this image:
Sea Lion checking out the Mad Dogs
While we were busy checking out the Steller Sea Lions, it
looks as if they sent out reconnaissance of their own. Sea
Lions in general have a very curious nature and this large
fellow was no different. He swam behind us for a while
effortlessly swimming and rolling through the water. Many
Sea Lions hob nob with their friends the
humpback whales, usually diving and playing around as
the whales dive, while whale watching boats and
cruise ship
passengers watch with excitement as a humpback whale
sighting near Point Adolphus, Alaska also usually includes
an encore performance by the Sea Lions. |

About this image:
Sea Lions on South Marble Island in Glacier Bay National
Park
This was another group of Steller Sea Lions located around
the corner from the others. Here they seemed to have a
little more breathing room as there didn't seem to be quite
as much pushing, shoving, grunting and groaning. Although
the larger cruise ships don't approach the Island too close,
many of the smaller "Pocket
Cruisers" stop by for a quick look. |

About this image:
Friends forever
We saw this little group of three Steller Sea Lions and
thought it should be on a Hallmark card. These three were
happily laid out on the rock, while the largest of the three
gingerly laid his flipper across his friend, maybe to keep
her warm? |

About this image:
More Steller Sea Lions
You can see quite a diverse age range in this photo. Some of
the young ones appear the have quite soft new fur while the
older ones are starting to look a little rough. Although Sea
Lions have powerful enough flippers to hold up their
enormous bodies, they apparently can't hold on to a hair
brush to straighten out their fur. |

About this image:
A couple BIG Steller Sea Lions
Steller Sea Lions are very playful, curious and inquisitive
creatures and they can also grow to amazing sizes. Males are
larger than females and can grow as large as 8 1/2 - 11 ft /
2.6 - 3.4 m and weigh as much as 2500 lbs / 1,100 kgs. A
hierarchy of power puts the largest, most powerful males in
charge of a harem of smaller females. Even though they can
grow so large and powerful, they prefer to be less than 150
ft / 50 m from water at any time. Once they slip into the
water they swim effortless, almost appearing to "fly"
underwater using their flippers as wings. |

About this image:
Ground squirrel having lunch
While we were walking around the Glacier National Park
Visitors Information Center in Bartlett Cove, Alaska, we
saw this little ground squirrel digging and scratching
for a few snacks. This little fellow wasn't particularly
scared, but if we ventured too close - "ZIP" - up the
tree he went, only to return a few moments later to
continue his lunch.
