About this image: Squirrel still having lunch
Up the tree and back again, our little friend continued his lunch. The vegetation around the Glacier Bay Park Visitors Center is almost the oldest most mature forest area in the entire Glacier Bay are, having been the first area given back by the retreating Glaciers. This squirrel has an abundant supply of nuts and seeds as you can see the lushness and diversity of the vegetation around him. This area, because of the recent retreat of the Glaciers is unlike any of the areas around the closest cities such as Skagway and Juneau.
Trees in Glacier Bay Park, a walk in the woods
About this image: A walk in the woods
Near the Glacier Bay Lodge there is a forest trail wandering it's way through the trees. This area, being the oldest forested area in Glacier Bay has begun to take the final step. As the trees and vegetation become mature and well established, the older trees, such as Sitka Spruce, finally give way, die and fall to the ground returning nutrients to the ground and a new place for moss, lichens and ferns to once again take hold of the landscape that they gave up to the trees so long ago.
Moss in the forest
About this image: A carpet of moss
This picture nicely captured the serenity and quietness of Glacier Bay Park. A carpet of moss, highlighted by the sun peeking in between the mature Sitka Spruce. This forested area is full of sights and sounds of birds, bugs and other small animals. Berries flourish with blueberries and raspberries growing on the side of the trail for our enjoyment. The berries still had a bit to ripen (they were a little mouth squeezing tart) but had a nice flavor. The Glacier Bay Visitors Center is located in Bartlett Cove which has facilities for camping as well as the availability of kayaks and bicycles. It is a short trip from Juneau by ferry and is a wonderful escape from the daily routine of land dwellers. It is unfortunate for Cruise Ship passengers that the Cruise Ships don't stop here. It is a beautiful and serene location.

Sunset in Bartlett Cove in Alaska Glacier Bay National Park
About this image: Sunset in Bartlett Cove in Alaska Glacier Bay National Park
Even though the day had been relatively cloudy, as evening approached the sky started to clear and give way. The setting was perfect for yet another late night sunset above the 58th parallel. Sky and water were divided by a thin line of Sitka Spruce which were beautifully silhouetted against the radiant sky.
About this image: Our last sunset in Bartlett Cove
A few moments later and the sky deepened a little more with the sun setting even lower. The water is almost now completely enveloped and bathed in the shadow of the spruce trees while the sky continued to glow brighter and brighter red with a picturesque Alaskan sunset.
