Recently we decided to begin including notes about our activities, plans and events happening in, on, or about Mad Dog Voyager. This isn't going to be a daily entry, logging everything we do, but if something interesting is planned or happens, this will be entered in this log.

In search of wolfs
Unfortunately the weather has turned for the worst and we are forced to stay in Bartlett Cove another day. The forecast is for Southerly winds 25 - 35 kts with gusts up to 45 kts and we watched as the barometer dropped from 1015 to 990 millibars overnight

In order to get into Glacier Bay from Bartlett Cove we need to head south from Bartlett Cove, round the corner, turn to the north and pass through the Sitakaday Narrows, which have a maximum tidal flow of almost 8 kts. Due to the timing of the tides we would have to head South from Bartlett Cove traveling with the tide but against the wind (the wind here generates both wind waves and large swells). We have already seen that this combination of tide and wind creates some pretty turbulent waters within Bartlett Cove.

Once we reach the outer edge of Bartlett Cove, we would round the corner and turn North into the Bay. Now we would be faced with an outgoing tide but have the wind at our backs. With the wind and swell coming from behind us, and a strong tidal flow hitting us head on, it would be a pretty uncomfortable and bumpy ride. As we are not in any rush, we'll just wait it out in Bartlett Cove another day and see how the weather turns.

Once back in Glacier Bay, we have planned to go deeper into the more remote areas of Glacier Bay, we want to get some photos of the only animals we haven't seen yet - wolves. There are supposed to be several large groups of wolves in the Bay and they would be the icing on our photographic cake.

We are planning to pick up additional propane, gasoline (for the Yamaha generator), top up the diesel tank and pick up a few extra groceries. A couple of days ago we took out the folding bikes and rode them the 9 miles / 15 km into the beautiful town of Gustavus, Alaska. Visually it was a wonderful trip (a nice road through dense forest) but we weren't looking forward to doing it with 3 propane bottles and 4 jerry cans (5 gal / 20 l each) of gasoline.

Since riding into Gustavus we've met many nice, friendly people (as well as reacquainting with people we met previously). Twice we've been offered vehicles to do our running around. This has been great! We were able to get our propane, fuel and groceries without exhausting ourselves in the process.

Gustavus is a small "town" (more of a collection of 450 people living in the same area), and the people we have interacted with so far have all been very friendly and helpful.

Thanks to our new friends: Kate & Fritz, Bill & Marilyn, Bruce, Vince and many more kind folks in Gustavus.

A tribute to true heroes

Quote: The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own. No apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on, or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins. - Bob Moawad -
